Mile End Delicatessen - Brooklyn, NY

Mile End is one of those unique spots that are rare to find outside of New York City. The interior hosts a modest and modern diner without the mediocre food usually accompanies them. The smoked meat sandwich and the homemade hot dog are the stars here and are both terrific. It’s located on a beautiful street in Boerum Hill just off of Atlantic Avenue.

A Glimpse of Americana at Swensons: Akron, Oh

At the height of the 1950′s, life was beautiful – men smoked cigarettes without caution, women wore poodle skirts, the economy was bustlings and the cars were gorgeous. Drive-in restaurants were popular and so was Buddy Holly. Now we have drive thru’s and Kei$ha. Luckily some drive in’s still exist and not in the form of something like Sonic. While they have been updated and renovated, some of the original Swensons, born in Akron, Ohio in 1934, still exist. Their staff aren’t on roller skates, but they do move very fast and put together a great burger!

Organic and Eco-Friendly Burger Joint: BareBurger, Murray Hill, NYC

This is the anti-fast food restaurant. The food at BareBurger is not super-fast but it is fast and they specialize in all-natural and organic meats, including, beef, turkey, lamb, bison, ostrich and elk! They sell an assortment of Maine Root soda’s and Wolaver Organic Beer from Vermont. But it isn’t just the organic meats that set them apart from your run-of-the-mill burger joints – their restaurant is made from recycled materials (bark for the walls, repurposed wood for tables and other decor) and they use compostable and biodegradable cutlery and takeout cartons. Extra points for having an awesome website!

Melt Bar and Grilled has been serving gourmet grilled cheese since 2006 in Cleveland, Ohio and boasts The Melt Challenge – 3 different cheeses, 3 slices of grilled bread and a pile of hand-cut fries & slaw which adds up to over 5 pounds of food and was featured on the Travel Channel’s Man Vs. Food. There are over 25 sandwiches to choose from, some of which sound incredibly strange, particularly The Parmageddon – 2 potato & cheese pierogi, fresh napa vodka kraut, grilled onions, and sharp cheddar.

Bark Hot Dogs: Park Slope, Brooklyn

Besides having a pretty killer hot dog, which is locally sourced, Bark Hot Dogs has amazing environmental ethics. Sitting very low on the chain of fast food joints, this hot dog, french fry and hamburger joint prides itself on using compostable and reusable materials as well as farm fresh ingredients in the production of their food and encourages its patrons to join in. They provide compostable cups for free filtered water rather than suggesting you buy a $2 nonperishable water from them.

I’m not a big fan of recycling, i find it time consuming and not economically feasible. We should be moving towards a more sustainable society, eliminating and substituting compostable options. Bark has done just that and it makes paying 5 bucks for a hot dog worth it.

French Fries are a staple of American food, but where did they come from? They were invented in the area known as Belgium in 1680. Pommes Frites, in the East Village has been serving this snack for many years and has become a neighborhood institution. In addition to the french fries, they serve a large variety of sauces, including War Sauce (in dutch: patatje oorlog) and Poutine.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Yeah, its a chain, but they do serve a pretty good product, as the name implies, burgers and fries. The burgers are two patties with cheese and whatever toppings you want, no additional cost for those toppings – grilled onions, mushrooms, tomato, onion, pickles, etc. It’s a damn good burger that pairs nicely with their thick cut salt-seasoned fries – a small is far to large for one person alone.
