Smorgasburg 2012 - Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC

I headed down to Smorgasburg on Saturday for the first time of this season and it’s even better than last season. In addition to some of the previous vendors there is a whole new list of vendors. It’s pretty clear that the people who run Smorg are pretty selective as everything seems to be the best of the best. Up this post is food from DuMont, Danny Macaroons, Morris Kitchen, Home By The Range, Schnitz, Takumi Taco, Shorty Tang & Sons, Dough, Mighty Quinn, Tiny Eats Kitchen, Bite Sized Kitchen, Asia Dog.

There is so much at Smorgasburg and I’d love to cover it all, but there is no way I can do it all in one day, so I’ll be back again soon with my camera to discover more of what they have. Until then, I offer you these.

Parked Food Festival - South Street Seaport, NYC, NY

Last year I covered The Parked Food Truck Festival out on Governor’s Island and I wasn’t too pleased as I saw enormous masses of people turned away after waiting entirely too long in endless and confusing lines. This year was such an amazing improvement over the last. Lines were shorter, less chaotic (as less chaotic as they can be in such situations) and the only people who ran out of food were the freshman food trucks that didn’t know what they were getting in to.

All things considered the food was inventive and fun and I had a great time perusing the endless carts thorough the South Street Seaport. Hats off to Mean Red Productions for making this a really great event.

The Hester Street Fair in NYC is probably one of the coolest events around. There are merchants peddling their wares, a coffee shop and a ton of food vendors – so many, in fact, that I had to split this blog post up into 2 blogs. So lets start with dessert first.

Parked Food Festival – Governor’s Island, NYC

As a food blogger, one of the most interesting subjects to me are the food trucks that have popped up in the city over the last few years. Trying to cover all of these random food trucks is very difficult because they are all over the city in different places. Except on September 5, 2010 when the food trucks all showed up in one location on Governor’s Island for the Parked Food Festival. Granted it wasn’t everything that the city has to offer in terms of food trucks, it was quite a few of them. Evidently there is so much warranted hostility towards the organizers of the event who inevitably underestimated the popularity of this event this year. I can’t really blame them, as I cannot blame the food trucks so I must blame the people with their appetites and their lack of planning for the day. It is very easy for me to say this, as I got food and didn’t have to wait in long lines. But then again, I was “working”. Even I, slacking a bit, arrived two hours after the event started and ended up missing the star attraction Red Hook Lobster Pound. The replacement star for me was The Cinnamon Snail with their vegan sandwiches which were absolutely amazing.

Red Hook Ballfields, Pt. 2: Red Hook, Brooklyn

This is a continuation of the Red Hook Ballfields post that I posted a few weeks ago. In this entry I focus more on the Huarache (spanish for shoe) is an oblong corn masa fried with refried beans. Many might say that it is close to a huge taco, but it is more along the consistency of a sope. They originated in Mexico city in the 1930′s and now are one of the more popular dishes at the Red Hook Ballfields. Country Boy’s won the NYC Vendy awards for 2009. for their amazing mexican fare. I high recommend that if you are planning your first trip to the Ballfields, you should start with one of the huaraches.

I’ve been raving about this place for years and I’ve taken a million photos of it also. finding all those photos hasn’t been an easy task. Instead I am shooting some new photos for this blog entry and I plan on doing some future blog posts about Red Hook ball fields soon. So keep a look out for it.

The food vendors started about 1 million years ago in Red Hook at the ball fields on Bay between Clinton and Court St. The original intent was to feed the soccer players and their families, but then something happened – someone from within the grid of NYC had a huarache and then the damn thing just exploded, putting the ball fields on the map. Today it is frequented by hispanic’s and hipsters alike. Recently I put up a post about Red Hook Mercado, a smaller less crowded version of the Ball Fields with El Olomega Pupusas, Grindhaus and Robicelli’s Cupcakes.

Last week when I attended the Techmunch event here in NYC. I met Matt Roberts of Robicelli’s cupcakes who informed me of The Red Hook Mercado – a small weekend outdoor eatery with music and some amazing food from Country Boys (2009 Vendy Award Winners) Taco Truck, Solber Pupusas, and Grindhaus (who took a world cup break during my visit). In addition, they now have Six Points IPA and Robicelli’s cupcakes with a nice selection of what are arguably the best cupcakes in NYC.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck: The Rise of the Roach Coach

  • Facebook

If you have ever been to Los Angeles you know that the best tacos are sold out of the commercial food trucks lovingly coined as Roach Coaches. Here in NYC, that trend is starting to take shape in the form of roach coaches that sell a variety of foods including, but not limited to, ice cream, wafels, fried chicken, tacos, crepes, cupcakes and juice. Even Taco Bell has started using this trend to sell their shitty tacos. Recently I have run into the Van Leeuwen Ice Cream truck on the corner of Spring and Mott. They have a modest list of hand-dipped options including Currants and Cream and Giandujia (a blend of chocolate and hazelnut), but their ice cream is a force not to be reckoned with. I went for a simple chocolate cone. If I’d have the time I would have gone for the Hot Fudge sundae. They list their locations online and through twitter so it’s easy to just “run in” to them.
