Hey, Where Were The Long Lines? – Googa Mooga 2013

Update: Googa Mooga just announced they are releasing more General Admission & VIP tickets today at the box office. So if you can handle a little rain and want to get in, head on over to Prospect Park. Kool & The Gang is headlining today guys!

Update #2: Nevermind. They just cancelled Googa Mooga over a little light rain. This really sucks for all the vendors, especially after a somewhat disappointing first two days. sorry that I didn’t have a chance to finish shooting it.

I’ll get to the food in a bit, but let me start by saying that attendance seemed WAAAAAYYYYYYYY low this year. From an attendee standpoint, this is a good thing, from a vendor standpoint, this is really bad. And next year means far fewer vendors will be inclined to have a booth there, even though they added additional vendors this year over last – an issue they thought would help remedy the problems of long wait times this year. This clearly wasn’t really an issue last year.

From an attendee’s point of view, this event was much improved over last year. The setup on the right of the main stage was set up differently. They moved the row further from the stage and put a row behind the other. Last year, lines for food ran into the stage area where people were watching the bands play. They were unruly and ran wildly through the field. This year, that was better, again for attendee’s. For vendors on that side, they seemed a little lost in the stagger especially over the vendors on the opposite side which was setup exactly as it was last year. Still though, the crowd was incredibly thin this year. Perhaps because of the weather? Perhaps because of the added day? Perhaps because the venue cut attendance from last year?

But from what some of the vendors were saying Saturday, Friday’s turnout wasn’t really that great either. At least not from a food sales perspective. Saturday was ok, but not great. Not what they were told to anticipate for by event organizers. On vendor I spoke with told me that the organizers told them to prepare for 4000 units to be sold over the 3 days. By the end of the second day they’d only sold a little over 1000 units. And this was a vendor that had far more press for the event than most other vendors.

GM-BeforeAfter The top photo was taken from 2012. Lines stayed pretty swamped all day long. The bottom photo is the line (or lack there of) from this year.

I’m not saying that this event is only successful if starving masses have to stand in line for 2 hours for a hot dog. But what I am saying is that there is nothing wrong with a little wait. 20 minutes wouldn’t kill anyone and hell, how long would you wait on a Saturday afternoon for a table at brunch?

I’d like to chalk it up to just being a shitty day and hopefully Sunday would be better. The forecast for Sunday, though, is worse that what today was. It would be nice however, seeing as GoogaMooga obviously has everything buttoned up quite nicely this year, if they’d would open up General Admission to more people tomorrow. I didn’t win tickets during the lottery, however, my girlfriend did. So I’m curious how many others out there they turned down. I’m sure the vendors are curious too.

IMG_9696More importantly, I want to know what the deal is with this guy?

From the outside looking in, this festival was pretty great today. The music was non stop on two large stages, there was no wait for most places, the bathrooms were slightly cleaner and there was plenty of room to move around. Here are some highlights from day 1.

4 Amazing Brooklyn Doughnut Shops – Brooklyn, NY

Amazing Brooklyn Doughnuts

Emily and I rarely eat doughnuts anymore, but since Sunday is our day to go wild, we decided it would be a good day to finally find our favorite doughnut in Brooklyn. We decided to settle it, here and now. Which, of course, is easier said than done. There are different varieties of doughnuts. You’ve got: Cake & yeast, creme filled, jelly filled, pudding filled, iced, sprinkled, glazed. To simplify the selection, we narrowed it down to our preferences. I prefer white-creme filled yeast donuts, like I grew up on (To be honest, Boston/Bavarian Creme is an abomination and putting it into a doughnut is a culinary sin.), then an old fashioned cake doughnut. Emily prefers chocolate yeast doughnuts, preferably not filled with anything. I actually expected different results than what we came up with.

4.) Dunwell Doughnuts – 222 Montrose Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206 – (347) 294-0871
This Vegan doughnut establishment, started almost two years ago in Bushwick may be our least favorite, but it got into the top four for a reason. Their flavors are creative and beautifully honed, the dough, moist and fresh. And to top it off, its the only vegan option in this entire list, if thats important to you. Really love the Spiced pear, and spiced pumpkin as well as their mini cider donuts, which really aren’t that mini.

3.) Dough – 448 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205 – (347) 533-7544
Their wildly original flavors and super airy soft dough make them the place we make a bee-line for at smorgasburg in the summer. Their small Bed-Stuy gets cramped quickly, and we wish they would have packed our Chocolate Earl Grey more carefully so it could be included in this photograph, but at least it still tasted good. The Lemon Poppy Seed was tart and tangy, as lemons go.

2.) 606 R & D – 606 Vanderbilt Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238 – (718) 230-0125
Amazing Brooklyn DoughnutsWhile not technically a doughnut shop, this small restaurant in Prospect Heights, is worth visiting for its doughnuts alone. Their small cake doughnuts remind me of the little diner doughnuts from back home. Its small-town homemade goodness from a very cute little brunch spot. The sugar coated cake doughnuts are moist and sweet and I could eat a dozen of them.

1.) Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop – 727 Manhattan Ave, New York, NY 11222 – (718) 389-3676
Growing up, my hometown had this bakery called The City Bakery and they had the most amazing creme sticks ever. We didn’t do the weekend doughnuts often but when we did it was a treat. My father would usually wake up early and go pick up doughnuts and by the time we woke up in the morning, they were ready and waiting for us. I looked forward to those doughnuts whenever I went home to visit, until several years ago it closed down for good. I’ve no idea why they couldn’t make it work. They had a great variety of pastries and baked goods and everything was amazing. But, ah, to hell with my hometown, they are clueless. Since I couldn’t go home to it, I figured, “oh well, NYC has to have something like it or better”. It took a while but then I found it: Peter Pan Donut & Pastry shop in Greenpoint. Their creme sticks are just as good as what I remember as a kid. The place is a basic diner, no pretention and very nice eastern european girls who serve you doughnuts – what more could you ask for? This place gets our top pick because even Emily, who doesn’t care much for creme filled confections, says it was her favorite out of all of them.

Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain
“The Elvis” Sundae and Red Velvet Twinkie Sundae at Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain

Brooklyn Farmacy has been around for a couple of years now and surprisingly this was my first visit to the neighborhood favorite for both children and adults. We stopped in after having pizza at Franny’s earlier in the day and wanted something a little bit sweet. This place hit the spot with their prohibition-era old fashioned soda fountain motif. I think Boardwalk empire seriously could do an episode here. I also want to come back again and do a more formal blog post – the photos down below are from the visit. Sadly they ran out of the potato chips for their potato chip sundae that my girlfriend wanted. So instead he made us his “Elvis” Sundae, which wasn’t coming out until the next day. So I got to be the first to taste. We also had the Red Velvet Twinkie Split which came with Chocolate, Vanilla and Coffee Ice cream – the coffee ice cream, btw, is one of the best flavors we’ve ever tasted.

Finally made it back to Smorgasburg in Williamsburg for the first time since the beginning of the summer. I love that the vendors keep changing and there is always something new to see there as well as the usual suspects and favorites. New to the fold, that caught my eye was Brooklyn Piggies and Honcho’s Tacos, both of which have much more inviting “tent-fronts” than a majority of the other vendors. Not that there food is bad, but presentation is just as important as having amazing food. Dough also executes this nicely. Yuji Ramen was different and inventive. And Hash Bar brings breakfast food to Smorg – Love it. Sunday Gravy is stepping it up by offering cute little Brushetta’s while Brooklyn Oyster Party shucks fresh oysters in the sun. The award for most beautifully styled storefront goes to Brooklyn Grange – thanks for bringing a little mini farmers market to Smorg (although, there used to be a farmers market there anyways, if I remember correctly from last summer). Waffle & Wolf - Brooklyn, NY

I stopped by Waffle & Wolf recently. They do these really cool waffle sandwiches with very creative ingredients, both sweet and savory. The owners are an American guy from the south and a turkish guy from, well…Turkey. I especially loved the avocado yogurt sauce on the #12. And the housemade mascarpone on the newest special.

I had a very little taste of both of these as I am no longer eating dairy, sugar or most grains. It’s been a week and things are already changing. I’m feeling a lot better than before. Less lethargic and more lasting energy through the day. I’ll be posting later about this, once I figure out what it is I’m doing. In the meantime, here’s some pictures from Waffle & Wolf. Also, I’ll be in LA for the next several days so there should be some great LA restaurant coverage coming up, since I’ll be eating every meal out.

The Best Pizza Ever – Di Fara’s Pizza – Brooklyn, NY

Difara's Pizza - Brooklyn, NY
Dom DeMarco has been making pies for over 50 years in Brooklyn

Difara's Pizza - Brooklyn, NY
Aside from the most amazing pizza in the world, the wait is the most memorable part of the experience.

Difara's Pizza - Brooklyn, NY

note: this is a much longer article than most, the rest of the pictures are after the story.

Pizza is one of the most important food items in the culinary world and extremely hard to nail with its varied taste preferences, depending on who you ask: deep dish, pan pizza, Sicilian, thin crust, thick crust, cracker-thin crust, cheese in the crust (thanks Papa Johns), mozzarella, provolone, cheddar, fontina, fromage blanc, spicy sauce (thanks 2 Boots), sweet sauce, white sauce. For good measure, the best way to test a pizza maker’s ability is to order a regular plain pie – crust, tomato-based sauce, cheese and see what it does for you. If it knocks your socks off, then you know there is some serious skill involved. I admire anyone who can make a killer cheese pie. The toppings are just embellishments that add a wide variety of taste and textures. I like a nice salty anchovy pie or the quintessential “Meat Lover’s” (thanks Pizza Hut).

The pizza wars here in NYC are a favorite subject of mine – I’ve tried Patsy’s, Lombardi’s, Grimaldi’s, Totonno’s, John’s, Joe’s, Artichoke, L & B, Motorino and about a million “Ray’s” (are any Ray’s above standard?) and while I would never scoff at any of these places, there still can only be one best pizza in NYC. Hands down, by a longshot, it is Di Fara’s Pizza. I declare that there is a pizza God and his name is Dom DeMarco .

I love when friends and family visit and tell me they went to Patsy’s and “OMG it was amazing” and I think “You didn’t go far enough”. And then another will say “I went to Lombardi’s and “OMG, isn’t it the best pizza you’ve ever had” and I think “You didn’t go far enough”. And then they say “I went all the way to brooklyn for the best pizza at Lombardi’s” and I think – “Grimaldi’s, really?” AND “You didn’t go far enough” This is why when they visit, I try to guide them the to the right places and I will take them to Di Fara’s because I truly want them to experience this place…plus it gives me a good excuse to go.

Yes, The best pizza in NYC is in Brooklyn, a city so great that it was once its own city, and by all rights should be today. No one scoffs at Brooklyn anymore. It’s a cool place – everyone wants to live here – HBO even rebooted Sex And The City, setting it in Brooklyn and called it GIRLS.

But Midwood, where you will find Di Fara’s Pizza, isn’t exactly, “On The Grid”. Perhaps slightly more on the grid then L & B Spumoni Gardens but considerably less on the grid than Motorino. But as the proverbial wise old man would say “the best things in life, you have to work for” (or something like that) – which in this sense means you’ll have to take the D train to Avenue J and its right there when you come above ground – no biggie.

The hard part is the wait, which in the heat of the summer is pretty miserable. And don’t think for a second “Oh its 139 degrees out, there won’t be a line at all”. Everyone is thinking that, especially me. People want this pizza, and they are willing to wait for it and for the most part they wait patiently. And when they don’t they’ve got about 2 dozen Dom defenders making sure respect is paid. I’ve waited two hours for a pizza – happily, with a smile on my face. They’ve messed up my order before – it happens I live with it – b/c its seriously the best damn pizza I’ve ever had. And not in some soup nazi kind of way either. Dom, the owner and sole pizza maker (The Maestro?), is very nice and if he remembers you, he takes a second to say hello – only a second though – because his main concern, well before they open, is making pizza.

I arrived at 11:20 on a Wednesday – 1/2 hour before they were set to open. Maggie, Dom’s daughter, greeted me at the door, her father and her were sitting in the dining room waiting for the ovens to warm up. I set up and talked to them for a few minutes. By 11:30, there was a person in line. By noon, there was a line 15 people deep. Dom made a pizza, put it in the oven, but wasn’t certain the ovens were ready yet. 12:15, the line is about 20 people deep. Pizza is not cooking evenly enough. 12:30, the oven is just about there and they open the doors. The people flood in. The first guy in line doesn’t say hello, just says “One Square pie with everything” (By which he means he wants the classic pie – onions, peppers, sausage. Within 5 minutes, they’ve got an entire sheet of orders. It’s at this point that I realize I should probably get my order in if I want to get a pizza.

This isn’t some factory where pies are constantly going in and coming out. Dom takes his time – patting the dough, stretching the dough, saucing, shredding the mozzarella, spreading it around, topping with parmesan, putting it in the oven. He could probably do it faster, he says, but that just wouldn’t be right. There is no rush for him. His customers, the ones in the know at least, they don’t mind. A customer, a local from the neighborhood, laughs, “It’s like he’s Michelangelo the way he makes each pie”. This is what I respect, more than anything. This isn’t a place you come to order a pizza and sit down. This is a place to watch a man and his craft in action. Even if the pizza were to suck, watching the process would be interesting enough.

I like to bring my family here when they visit from out of town but I warn them that having this pizza will 1.) be a very long wait in a very hot restaurant and 2.) will ruin them for pizza for the rest of their lives because no pizza, ever, will live up to what this place can do.

This isn’t some trendy brunch spot in your favorite nyc neighborhood. It’s not a passing fad (he’s been making pizzas for over 50 years). This is the real deal and I don’t care what you say – if you haven’t had Di Fara’s pizza, you still haven’t had the best pizza.

If you come in for a square pie, be prepared to wait. The pizza goes in twice. Once to cook the crust and another time to brown it and cook the toppings – Dom’s square special pie is the best and worth the wait.

Their menu comes with it’s own MOB comic book. They make “cheesecake” by culturing almond milk with probiotics. Need I say more? Well, yes, I should. The menu is simple, in a good way. The MOB’s are amazing – my favorites are the Iron Man and The Belly Charmer (pictured below). But this special one, made by chef Neal Harden, is not on the menu. It features avocado, zucchini and tomato with olive tapenade. The bread is a crispy and soft flatbread (which also comes gluten-free) that is shaped like the arches of the Brooklyn Bridge and out of this world. The presentation of these are really cool. The quinoa salad is refreshing and filling. Kale chips are served like tortilla chips at a mexican restaurant and you can have as many as you want. And as it turns out are super simple to make (recipe after the photographs). I’m not a vegan but if I ate at this place everyday, I’d have no complaints.

Behind the Scenes and The Extra Mooga Experience at The Great Googa Mooga

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Google
  • StumbleUpon

Was Googa Mooga a bust? Was Extra Mooga worth it? Was this whole thing overhyped and did it under-deliver? Well, the internets tell us conflicting stories, and I guess its up to the individual to decide. Here’s a blow by blow of my experiences, and especially of the Extra Mooga.

GM was massive – bigger than I thought it was going to be and probably bigger than even the organizers or vendors expected considering the first day hurdles that the organizers seemed to try to quickly remedy. The first day was very difficult because there wasn’t much clear about where to go and what to do and I had missed the press event that probably clarified a lot of those questions for me. But eventually I figured out how to get around and avoid the crowds and was able to get to shooting. I had EM tickets for Sunday, thanks to the awesome folks at Rubenstein, so I had to get the majority of the vendor shooting done on Saturday. My goal was to shoot every vendor, but seeing as it was only 3pm and vendors were running out of food, I had to pick and choose. I particularly frown upon the vendors that run out of food, most of them should know how these things go at this point and be well prepared, nah, over prepared. But yeah, whatever, there were so many vendors that there were still an incredible selection available. My biggest point of contention was that there was a serious lack of vegetarian options – everyone was doing meat, meat, meat, but there was no representation for the herbivores and omnivores among us – it would have been less of a deal if I wasn’t keeping the company of a vegetarian. Still though, it must be said, these vendors did such an amazing job keeping up. Here’s a look behind the scenes at what these guys did to keep the food coming.

Extra Mooga Events and Entertainment
The big sell on the Extra Mooga is perhaps the events. I found that with the amazing lineup, it would be well worth the cost. I wasn’t there for the Saturday debacle, but it seemed like most of the problems were resolved come Sunday. My only complaint is that there was obviously time to stagger these events so I could attend more. I found it hard to get from one to the other in enough time. I really wanted to cover the John Dorey Oyster Shucking but by the time I got there, they were out of oysters. The final event, The Big Gay Ice Cream Disco was absolutely amazing. Patton Oswald, Tom Colicchio, and Eddie Huang were hilarious, and I always love seeing Bourdain!

Smorgasburg 2012 - Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC

I headed down to Smorgasburg on Saturday for the first time of this season and it’s even better than last season. In addition to some of the previous vendors there is a whole new list of vendors. It’s pretty clear that the people who run Smorg are pretty selective as everything seems to be the best of the best. Up this post is food from DuMont, Danny Macaroons, Morris Kitchen, Home By The Range, Schnitz, Takumi Taco, Shorty Tang & Sons, Dough, Mighty Quinn, Tiny Eats Kitchen, Bite Sized Kitchen, Asia Dog.

There is so much at Smorgasburg and I’d love to cover it all, but there is no way I can do it all in one day, so I’ll be back again soon with my camera to discover more of what they have. Until then, I offer you these.

Le Paddock - Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, NYC

Rather than further whining about how horrible my neighborhood is/used to be, in terms of restaurant offerings, I think I’d rather talk about the good things. Le Paddock is the newest offering to Windsor Terrace featuring rustic french cuisine and really amazing pizza. The owners, Sylvie Bertrand and Gregory Tetaud worked together at Robin Des Bois in Carroll Gardens. I fell in love with the food here on the first visit having sampled the Coq au Vin and The Forrestiere Pizza
